The Alumni of the Rehabilitation Counseling Program at UMB work in a variety of rehabilitation settings, including state rehabilitation agencies, private rehabilitation companies, rehabilitation facilities, hospitals, federal veterans programs, mental health centers, school systems, universities, law enforcement agencies, independent living centers, insurance companies, and private practice. The alumni enjoyed the time that they spent in our Rehabilitation Counseling Program. They feel that the Rehabilitation Counseling Program at UMB has prepared them for their jobs.

Below are comments from the Alumni:

"The UMass Rehabilitation Counseling Program was a meaningful and educational experience for me. The class participation was stimulating, informative and practical in enhancing my knowledge base as a Rehabilitation professional. My advisor and professors were always available. The individual instruction and support from my advisor and professors made the experience one that I will remember with pleasure and pride. The Program provided an excellent foundation for my position as Southeast Area Department of Metal Health Rehabilitation Director. As Director, I develop, monitor, and evaluate the implementation of Rehabilitation initiatives throughout Southeastern Massachusetts. I am responsible for creating systems to determine the efficacy of Rehabilitation Services and promoting performance improvement activities. I also directly manage the Brockton DMH Site Rehabilitation programs which include; Day Rehabilitation, Day Treatment, Supported Employment, Work Adjustment, and a Psychosocial Clubhouse. As Manager I oversee service utilization, performance improvement, staff development, risk management, client satisfaction survey, and data/statistical collection and analysis. I write program service plans, goals and objectives, proposals, grants, performance indicators, client assessment and training materials, and annual reports".

"Hi! I am Carol. I am a rehabilitation counselor at the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission. I graduated from the RC program at the UMB in June of 2000. While pursuing my Master's degree I worked full-time as a state rehabilitation counselor. The Program at UMB was very helpful and consistent in the way that rehabilitation counseling is practiced in the field. The faculty is extremely supportive in helping students in any capacity possible. I am very happy that I had chosen UMB to complete my master's degree and would strongly recommend this program to anyone who wishes to be a vocational rehabilitation counselor."

Carol Gulino, M.Ed., CRC., 2000 Graduate

"I enrolled in the Rehabilitation Counseling program to expand my knowledge of disability, counseling and the services available to people returning to work. My educational background was a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy from Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland. I had worked for one year with people recovering from Traumatic Brain Injuries, and wanted to learn more about the services available to assist them return to work. The UMass-Boston program became my avenue to assist me to continue to learn and provide a better service to my clients. I continued to work full time and study part time. The Rehabilitation Counseling Class was a small friendly group of professionals from different work backgrounds. We learned through group work, role-playing counseling sessions, individual readings and guest speakers. Attending Internship was an invaluable aspect of the course. I spent my internship at the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission in Quincy, Massachusetts. I was able to work directly with clients who wanted to return to employment. I incorporated theories and principles learned from the UMass-Boston Program into my daily work. I assisted in a job club group as members and staff worked diligently to find jobs. This group was energetic, resourceful and extremely rewarding as every one worked together for a common goal. I enjoyed every minute of my experience at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, and at the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission. I learned about my strengths and can now offer my clients a better rehabilitation service. Since graduation I returned to Ireland where I work as a Senior Occupational Therapist. I use counseling skills in my work on a daily basis. Although I work mainly with the elderly, I have given talks to my colleagues on topics such as "Job Readiness" and "Barriers to returning to Employment".
